Birth: May 25, 1875
Castalian Springs

Tennessee, USA
Death: Jun. 12, 1936
Tennessee, USA

Musician. Humphrey Bate was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and a practising physician in Sumner County. He formed the Augmented Orchestra, an old-time string band but George Hay of the Grand Ole Opry insisted he change the band's name to "Dr. Humphrey Bate and the Possum Hunters". He played in the historic first ever broadcast for the Grand Ole Opry and Hay was later to describe Dr. Bate as the "Dean" of the Opry. The group's tunes included "How Many Biscuits Can You Eat?," "Ham Beats All Meat," and "Throw the Cow Over the Fence".
