HEADSTONE says born 1891; other information says 1892. Says Adolf [Adolph] Bastian [Bastien].

INFORMATION FROM RELATIVE Ron Lovel ([email protected]) of Ishpeming says his given name was spelled Adolph Joseph Bastien. (Source: Birth/Baptismal Records of the Precious Blood Catholic Church, Stephenson, Michigan). The following information comes from his Mich. Death Certificate and WWI Selective Service Registration: Adolph Joseph Bastien resided in Gladstone, Mich. with a wife and child. He was 26 years old and a Section Foreman for the Chicago & Northwestern Railway. His job took him all over Upper Michigan. He died of Diptheria, a communicable disease that in 1918 usually resulted in a quick burial, rather than transporting his body back to Gladstone. I believe that is why his birth year and first name are in error on his headstone.

As fate would have it, several years after Adolph's death and internment at Watersmeet, his sister, Mary Aurora married a McDonald from Watersmeet, where they raised a family and she is buried near Adolph.
