Mr. Bass died of cancer Feb. 16 at his home in San Rafael, Calif. He was 57.
He was born March 12, 1937, in Crosby, Miss., and grew up in Vernonia. He won All-State honors in football and basketball and graduated from Vernonia High School. He attended Portland State University.
He served in the U.S. Army National Security Agency from 1957 to 1960. While stationed in Germany, he was selected as athlete of the year of European forces.
In 1960 he married Elvera ''Ellie'' Palumbis.
He was active in sales in the tobacco industry. In 1985 he moved to San Rafael to become president of Lignum 2 Inc.
He was a member of Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Marin County, Calif.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Pete of New Milford, Conn., Nicholas of Eugene, and Christopher and Michael, both of Portland; brothers, Chester of Portland and Calvin of Gresham; sisters, Barbara Raney of Seaside and Patti Drip of Sonora, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Internment in Riverview Cemetery.
