John Basmajian, 83, Dies of Skull Fracture In Truck-Car Accident

Funeral services for John Basmajian, 82, were held this morning at 10:30 o'clock in St. John's Episcopal Church, and burial was made in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Many prominent people from throughout the area called at the funeral home or attended the service this morning.

Mr. Basmajian, a long time business man of Massena, died in Massena Memorial Hospital at 11:15 o'clock Saturday night, April 12, 1969.

His condition had been serious since Friday night a 4:22 o'clock when he and his wife were involved in a car-truck accident at the intersection of the Stephenville-St. Regis Boulevard.

Mr. and Mrs. Basmajian were entering the St. Regis Boulevard at the Stephenville access road, at Ames Store, and Mr. Basmajian had stopped at the stop sign, according to village police.

He then proceeded onto the highway.

Antaras Sutkartes, 59, was driving a loaded truck owned by the St. Lawrence Rendering Company, St. Catherine, LaPrairie, Quebec.

The truck struck the Basmajian car and then tipped over onto the car.

They were taken to the Massena Memorial Hospital in the Donaldson ambulance. Death was due to a basal skull fracture and the secondary cause was a left temple skull fracture.

Mrs. Basmajian suffered a concussion, bruises and other injuries in the accident, but is in fair condition at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Basmajian was born in Armenia. He left Armenia in 1909 for Argentina, where he worked as a laborer until 1913 when he came to Massena.

He worked at Alcoa until 1916, when he purchased the grocery store at 18 Park Avenue, which he operated until 1956 when he retired. At one time, he owned a chain of food markets with other Armenian merchants in Massena, known as Basmajian and Co.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Virginia Bochalian; a son, Walter Basmajian; three daughters, Mrs. Herman Natowitz of Potsdam, Mrs. Nate Agnello of Rochester and Mrs. Arma Markarian of East Providence, RI; and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Basmajian's first wife, and a son and a brother were killed during the Turkish massacre in which more than 2 1/2 million Armenians were killed.
