Melissa Caroline Barwick Grant of Braxton, Mississippi died peacefully in Jackson on December 31, 2011.
Mrs. Grant was born on March 31, 1924, in Braxton, Mississippi. After graduating as valedictorian of Braxton High School, she continued her education at Copiah Lincoln Junior College and Mississippi State College for Women, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree. Upon graduation, she worked briefly for Mississippi School Supply. She married John Samuel "Sam" Grant, Jr. in 1949.
She devoted her life to rearing her children and caring for her loved ones. She assisted Mr. Grant in the family business, Western Auto Associate Store in Richland. A loyal member of Alta Woods United Methodist Church in Jackson for approximately 60 years, she was a member of the J.B. Thompson Discussion Sunday School Class and the church choir, and she faithfully served as a first grade Sunday School teacher for over 25 years. Mr. and Mrs. Grant were long-time residents of South Jackson until retirement, when they moved to Braxton near her birthplace.
Mrs. Grant's family and friends recall a life of gratitude and commitment to God, which was most commonly expressed by selfless service to others and a deep appreciation of His creation.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, John Samuel Grant, Jr; her parents, Emmett and Elsie Barwick; her brother, James Andrew Barwick; and her sister, Anna Bess Barwick. She is survived by her children, John Samuel Grant III (Julia); Melissa Ann Grant Ridgway (Richard); and Caroline Grant Griffin (James); nine grandchildren, John Samuel Grant IV; Annalissa Johnson Grant; Richard Lewis Ridgway, Jr. (Claire); Caroline Ridgway Hogan (Reed); Samuel Grant Ridgway (Lauren); Anna Bess Ridgway; Rebekah Ann Griffin; John William Griffin; and Stephen James Griffin; and by seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wright and Ferguson on High Street and at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Alta Woods United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Alta Woods United Methodist Church with burial at Braxton Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Alta Woods United Methodist Church.
