Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He served in the Confederate Army at the beginning of the Civil War as a Colonel of the 8th Georgia Infantry regiment. At the July 21, 1861 First Battle of Bull Run, he was killed in action along with Brigadier General Bernard Bee while defending Henry House Hill. His last words were "They have killed me; but boys, the day is ours. Never give up the field!". Two monuments for him stand today in the Manassas National Military Park in Mansassas, Virginia.
