Son of Isaac and Jane Barton. Practiced law in Morgan and Greene Counties, Tennessee, and eventually settled in Hamblen County, Tennessee. Wife: Hannah E. McFarland (married in 1848). During the Civil War, managed the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad, and was captured (as a civilian) at Saltville, Virginia, in April, 1865. Came to Chattanooga in 1876, and practiced law there. Presbyterian faith.
