Hollywood--(AP)--Gilbert Roland gives much credit for his movie success to his late school teacher, Mrs. Alma Bartlett of El Paso, Texas.
Roland, from Mexico, was taught English by Mrs. Bartlett. He recently set up an award in her honor.
Established at the convention of the National Association of Spanish Teachers in San Diego, it consists of certificates in proficiency to high school students who score best in Spanish language tests. Roland envisions a trophy for the student who scores highest in the tests.
"My family was chased out of Mexico by Pancho Villa," Roland recalls, "and my first teacher in El Paso was Mrs. Bartlett. I learned English from her and she Spanish from me. I loved her all her life, for she guided me when I needed guiding most.
"I do not think enough credit is given the wonderful, dedicated school teacher. I am hoping this award will in some small way honor the memory of one of them."
