"S. S. Bartlett was born in West Virginia April 2, 1828. His parents then moved to Ohio, remained there for[some] time, then moved to [Moniteau County], and then to Cooper [county?. He] was about six years years old when they came to Missouri, from Cooper county to Livingston county. He taught school in Livingston county a number of years, was married to Miss Elvira Coburn in 1852. To this union 8 children were born of whom five are living - L(Lycurgess) and U.S. Bartlett and Mrs. Sallie Marple of this county, and Mrs. Laura McLaurey [sic] of Cushing, OK, and Mrs. Emma J. Everett of Clinton, NJ. They moved to Carroll county about 44 years ago where he settled on a farm three quarters of a mile south of Coloma. He was a deacon of the Baptist Church. Has been a member of the Baptist Church for 43 years.
"The weather was never too bad to keep him from his church. His wife died 8 years ago. Since then he made his home most of the time with his daughter, Mrs. Sallie Marple of Coloma. He and his father, Mack Bartlett laid out the town of Coloma many years ago. Died at his son's home, U. S. Bartlett's, the old home place, Feb. 11, 1914, aged 85 years, 10 months and 9 days.
"He has 26 grandchildren and 26 great grand children. Funeral was preached by his pastor, Rev. F. E. Carter at Coloma Baptist church on Feb. 13, 1914. Interment in the Coloma cemetery."
