Twice married, twice widowed, and the mother/stepmother of a large family, Mrs. Paine died "in the 80th year of her age". Born during December 1672 to Lt. William Bartholomew and the former Mary Johnson, she became the bride of Joseph Frissell shortly after her 18th birthday. Eight children were born to the couple during their 13-year marriage. Widowed in her early thirties, she married again within five years. Her second husband was Samuel Paine, a widower with several children, and the mature newlyweds' blended family was later increased by two children born of this second marriage. Mrs. Paine's slate stele is extraordinary in that it features neither a winged death's head nor a soul effigy in its tympanum, but a clock with Roman numerals, its hands at the Roman numerals XII and VI. Like the pick and shovel and the crossed bones images which also adorn her stone, the clock is a mortality symbol akin to the more commonly seen hourglass.
