IRONTON -- Carol Bernice Bartels, age 87, of Ironton, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, of extensive burns at her home. She was born on Dec. 18, 1916, in Morgan, Minn., to Charles and Edna (Ellies) Pickar. She was united in marriage to Elmer E. Bartels on Nov. 19, 1936, in Glencoe, Minn. She graduated from Wabasso High School and attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing, St. Paul. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Crosby. She was active with the DFL party of Minnesota. She was a member of the Myrin-James American Legion Post No. 443, Ironton, Ironton Commercial Club, VFW Auxiliary, Brainerd, former mayor of Ironton, and a member of the Ironton Housing Authority.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William (Colleen) Bartels, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Charles (Donna) Bartels, of Brainerd; three daughters and sons-in-law, Bonita (David Chassis) Griffith, of Austin, Texas, Bette (Richard) Smitheram, of Alameda, Calif., and Brenda (Garrett) DeWitt, of Brainerd; two sisters, Helen Radde, of Waconia, and Jeanne (Harold) Hansen, of Sleepy Eye; four sisters-in-law; Dorothy Bartels, of LaPalma, Calif., Ann Bartels, of St. Peter, Minn., Doloris Bartels, of Glencoe, Minn., Arlene (Edward) Pinske, of Gaylord, Minn.; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by husband Elmer, three sisters, Hazel Bauer, Pearl Lindeman and June Mock.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Crosby. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby. Friends may call on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby with a rosary at 7 p.m.
