He and older brother Albert had adjoining farms in Lyman county. On 25 Jun 1927 he married Edith Gould, whose parents had moved to Stanley county from Wisconsin. They had five children: Robert, Larry, John, Edward, and Richard. After retiring, he and Edith moved to Pierre, where he died in 1957. Surviving him were his wife, his children, brother Albert, and two sisters Elsie Ehlers and Alma Van Ness.

PIERRE--Funeral services for Henry Bartels, 57, who died in St. Mary's Hospital Oct. 31, were held Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. in the Fort Pierre Congregational Church.
Burial was in Phillips Cemetery [sic] at Ft. Pierre.
He is survived by his widow; five sons, Larry, Robert, and John, Ft. Pierre; Edward, who is in the U.S. Navy; Rickey at home; one brother, Albert Bartels, Pierre; two sisters, Mrs. Donald Van Ness, Ft. Pierre and Mrs. Henry Elshers [sic--Ehlers], Presho.
