Iva (Turner) Barstow, daughter of the late James Burwell and Edna Cross Turner, died peacefully at Evergreen Health Care Center on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010.
Born in Becket on Aug. 11, 1914, she graduated from Chester High School and Westfield State Teacher's College and taught school in Colrain. She married Roger C. Barstow in June 1936. Making their home in Hadley, together they ran R.C. Barstow Trucking Co., until Roger's death in 1977. In 1947, she joined the First Congregational Church of Hadley and was very involved in the church life. In 1978, she became the first woman deacon, the the 1960's, she began volunteering in the coffee shop at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, where she remained until into her 80's.
She leaves her son, Kenneth and his wife Laqueta of Chesterfield, Mo., daughter, Ruth Stone and husband Harry of Stafford Springs, Conn., and three grandchildren; Tracy Stone wilson and partner Tom Frechette of Bellows Falls, Vt; Donald Stone and wife Kim of Ellington, Conn., and Beth Barstow Bray and husband Willy of Union, Mo. She also leaves five great-grandchildren; Kelly and Cody Wilson, Jenna and Jessie Stone and Will Bray. She was predeceased by brothers Dana B. and James W. Turner and a sister, Esther T. Moulthrop.
A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Hadley, 102 Middle Street. Friends are invited to visit with family at the church after 10 a.m. There will be refreshments and a time for sharing memories following the service. A private burial will be held a the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Hadley.
