Helen Barry "Nell" Hlasnick (1921 - 2013)

OLEAN - Helen "Nell" Barry Hlasnick of 139 N. 11th St. passed away Thursday (June 27, 2013) at The Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Olean.

Born Nov. 30, 1921, in Olean, she was the youngest of seven children born to John D. and Anna Karl Barry. She was married to Edward Hlasnick on July 21, 1947, in St. Mary of the Angels Church.

Helen was a graduate of St. Mary's Parochial School, Olean High School and Westbrook Commercial Academy. She had been employed at Olean Medical Group, St. Francis Hospital and Concord Medical Group. At the time of her retirement, she was working as an accountant for GFC Business Systems Inc.

She volunteered for the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University. She was an avid fan of the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bills, and she enjoyed quilting and oil painting.

Lovingly called "Nonnie" by her family, she is survived by a son, David B. (Shelly) Hlasnick of Hinsdale; a daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Demitrovic of Hinsdale; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special sister-in-law, Marcia Barry of Olean.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Monica (Robert) Ryder, Marian (Larry) Freaney and Elizabeth (Franz) Westfall; and three brothers, J. Edward Barry, John E. Barry and William D. Barry.

At Mrs. Hlasnick's request, there will be no visitation. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a date and time to be announced at St. Mary of the Angels Church. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
