The Rev. Donald L. Barron, 53, parochial vicar of the Holy Name Church, died on Wednesday in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Born here, he was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School and College in Cassadaga, N.Y. He was graduated from the Seminary of Philosophy in Montreal, Quebec, in 1966, and St. John's Seminary in Brighton in 1970. He was a deacon at St. Aloysius's Church in 1970-71, and was ordained by the Most Rev. Christopher J. Weldon, Roman Catholic Bishop of Springfield, on Sept. 11, 1971.
He was an assistant at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke, St. Mary's Church in Westfield, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Holyoke. He became pastor of the Notre Dame Church in Adams in 1983, and served until 1994. That December, he became the parochial vicar of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Palmer. He was the parish's administrator pro-tem, and also at St. Bartholomew's Church in Bondsville, Palmer. In 1995-96, he was the parochial vicar of St. Mary's Parish in Lee, and St. Ann's in Lenox. He came here in January 1997 to become parochial vicar of the Holy Name Church.
He leaves his father, Donald J. Barron; a sister, Ellen B. Lagunowich of West Redding, Conn., and a niece and nephew.
There will be a pontifical liturgy of Christian burial on Monday morning in the Holy Name Church, with the burial at St. Aloysius's Cemetery in Indian Orchard.
The calling hours are Sunday afternoon and evening in the church at 323 Dickinson St., with a prayer vigil on Sunday evening. Ratell Funeral Home is in charge.
