Agnes Brown Barrett, IU Professor Emeritus, passed away Friday, June 20, 2008 at St. Vincent Hospice. She was born in Indianapolis on November 11, 1920 to the late Jane Egan Brown and Clarence A Brown of Brown Brothers Packing Inc. Professor Barrett was active locally and nationally. She was appointed by Senator (Mayor) Richard Lugar to the Blue Ribbon Committee and Police Merit Board of Indianapolis in March of 1974. She served as regional vice-president of the American Association of University Women and President of the Indianapolis Branch. She was president of Women's Rotary Club, the St. Thomas More Society, and the Indianapolis Propylaeum. She accepted a request to serve on the ad hoc committee of Catholic Charities of the Arch Diocese of Indianapolis to help draw up a set of by-laws and a constitution. She also sat on the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities. Mrs. Barrett was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church.

After spending a year at Barnard College on scholarship, an interest in business administration led her to complete her education at Indiana University. After graduation, she served as assistant secretary for American States Insurance Co. and while working there received her law degree from IU. Dean Cleon Foust, of IUPUI School of Law, asked and encouraged her to join the Law School faculty and she taught corporate law. Professor Barrett was the first female Professor of Law at the IUPUI School of Law.

She was a member of the Supreme Court of Indiana, the American Bar Association, Indiana State Bar Association, the National Association of Legal Secretaries, Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, and a 50 year member of the DAR.

Professor Barrett was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Walter Brown. She has eight nieces and nephews. She has four step daughters: Ann Smith (Greg), Carol Kerrigan (John), Kathy Willard (Denny), and Pat Graviss (Kevin). She has nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her husband, Clark J Barrett, retired local business man, survives her. All loved her very much.

Services were entrusted to Leppert Mortuary of Indianapolis, Indiana.
