Carmel Ann Barrett, 87, of Cheyenne died Jan. 4 at the Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne.

She was born May 31, 1923, in Rawlins to John and Catherine Martinez. She graduated from Rawlins High School in 1941. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of Wyoming. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at UW. During World War II, she attended Jefferson Medical College Hospital of Philadelphia and earned a diploma in medical technology in 1945. Memorial Hospital of Cheyenne and Dr. David Flett, the first internist in Wyoming, employed her as a medical and X-ray technician.

She married James E. Barrett in Rawlins on Oct. 8, 1949. They made their home in Lusk for 18 years. He practiced law in the firm of Barrett & Barrett, and she was a homemaker. They and their three children moved to Cheyenne in 1967 after her husband accepted an appointment by Gov. Stanley K. Hathaway to serve as Wyoming attorney general. They remained in Cheyenne after President Richard Nixon appointed her husband in 1971 to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit, headquartered in Denver.

She was a member of Saint Mary's Cathedral Parish and was active in Cathedral Guild, hospital auxiliaries and the choirs at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Lusk and St. Mary's Cathedral. In later years, she traveled extensively throughout the world and was devoted to opera, theatre, literature, nature and power walking. She especially loved the oceans and the mountains. She possessed a beautiful smile, a marvelous sense of humor and a compassionate heart.

She is survived by her husband, Hon. James E. Barrett of Cheyenne; her daughter, Ann Sandahl and her husband, John, of Carlsbad, Calif.; son, Richard Barrett and his wife, Rosemary, of Cheyenne; son, John Barrett of Cheyenne; sister, Jacqueline Ferrall of Cheyenne; sister-in-law, Marialyce Tobin of Casper; granddaughters Elizabeth Sandahl, Caitilin Barrett and Kelly Barrett; grandson, Thomas Sandahl and his wife, Kirsten; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Martinez, and her sisters, Mary Mace of Saratoga and Janet McGovern of Columbus, Ohio.
