Charles Barrett
Birth: Feb. 14, 1915
Death: Jul. 28, 1990

Major League Baseball Player. Played Major League baseball as a pitcher for 11 seasons (1937 to 1940, 1943 to 1949) with the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Braves and St. Louis Cardinals. His initial Major League experience was in very limed duty with the Reds, where he spent much time working on control problems (in 6 games pitched in 1938 he won 2 games, but walked 15 batters while only registering 5 strike outs). After spending 1941 and 1942 in the Minors (where he was the MVP of the Intentional League), he came up with the Braves in 1943, with whom he spent his first full season. On August 10, 1944 he made history as he shut out his old team, the Reds, 2-0, giving up only two hits, and using only 58 pitches to gain the win. His 58-pitch effort still stands today as a record for fewest pitches in a nine-inning ball game. In May 1945, after posting a 2-3 record at the start of the seasons, he was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Mort Cooper. Being backed up with stars like Marty Marion, Whitey Kurowski and Red Schoendienst, he would go on to win a total of 23 games that year, which was best in the National League. He also led the NL in complete games with 24 and was named to the NL All-Star team. His great season proved to be his only winning one of his career, and after a injury filled 1946 season he was traded back to the Braves. In 1948 he went only 7 wins-8 losses, but he helped the Braves to the National League Pennant and the World Series, where they faced the Cleveland Indians. He pitched in relief in Games 2 and 3, which where both won by the Indians, who also won the Series 4 games to 2. He pitched 23 games in relief in 1949 before retiring from baseball. His career totals were 69 Wins-69 Losses, 253 Games Pitched, 333 Strike Outs, 7 Saves, and a 3.53 career ERA. He was featured on the cover of the August 1, 1946 "Life" Magazine in a full length photo of him on the pitchers mound. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
