Elsie Barreras Auza, 92, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2006 at her home in Tacna, Arizona surrounded by her family. She was born on July 12, 1913 in Magdalena, New Mexico to Climaco and Modesta Barreras. She was 10 years old when her family moved to Flagstaff, Arizona in 1923. She attended Normal School in Flagstaff from the 3rd-8th grades.
In October 1933 she married Frank Auza, a Basque sheepherder and began the life of a wife and mother. Elsie and Frank had eight children, all raised in Flagstaff.
She enjoyed having a house full of people. She was great at visiting and entertaining guests. Elsie was an accomplished gardener and famous for her delicious cooking. She loved to dance and did so whenever she got the chance. She was also featured in NAU's Cline Library Digital Archives: Voices of the Colorado Plateau with her husband, Frank.
Elsie and Frank bought a home in Tacna in 1973 to escape the cold winters of Flagstaff. In recent years, she spent more time in Tacna, but Flagstaff was always her home.
Mrs. Auza was very involved with the Arizona Wool Growers Auxiliary for many years and was honored by the Flagstaff Sheriff's Posse for her assistance with the annual barbecues. She was a devout Cathilic and an outstanding citizen.
Mrs. Auza is survived by her eight children, Frances (Fidel) Jorajuria, of Tacna, Joe (Carmen) Auza, of Casa Grande, Arizona, Frank,Jr. (Ann) Auza, of Roll, Arizona, Pete (Joanie) Auza, of Yuma, Johnny Auza, of Roll, Martin (Shirley) Auza, of Yuma, George Auza, of Tacna, and Elsie (Ramon) Jorajuria, of Tacna. She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; brother George Barreras, of Flagstaff; and many friends.
Mrs. Auza was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Frank Auza; father Climaco Barreras; and mother Modesta Schaffer Barreras.
Rosary and visitation will be at The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel in Flagstaff on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel on Friday, May 5, 2006 at 11 a.m.
Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Flagstaff.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Elsie Auza's name may be made to Hospice of Yuma, 1824 S. 8th Ave., Yuma, AZ 85364 or Northland hospice, P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, AZ.
Arrangements are by Norvel Owens Mortuary in Flagstaff with special assistance by Johnson Mortuary in Yuma.
