JONESBORO, LA - Corra Golden Barr, Jonesboro, Louisiana, was born on December 1, 1910, in Calvin, Louisiana. She died June 18, 2009, at the age of 98. Visitation will be held at Edmonds Funeral Home, Saturday evening, from 5-9p.m. Funeral services are under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro, will be held at Jonesboro United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at 2p.m., with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Jonesboro, with Rev. Rick Cole presiding.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Leesa Quarles Cole and husband Rick of Hodge, LA., two grandsons, Jonathan Kevin Quarles of Jonesboro, LA., and Carlton Scott Quarles of Dallas, TX, and four great grandsons, Bryan Cole, Tim Cole, Bradley Cole and Jacob Cole of Hodge, LA., as well as nieces and nephews, Virginia and W. H. Jones, Blanche and John Shows, Beverly Bishop, Betty and Yancy Myers, Nancy Gates, Grady and Suzanne Golden, Bill and Joann Golden, Patti and Danny Fellows, Sue Cannon, Barry and Diana Cannon, Mark and Carolyn Shepherd and a host of lifelong friends.
Ms. Barr was preceded in death by her husband, James Dawson Barr and her daughter, Rebecca Barr Quarles, her parents, Carlton D. and Minnie Mixon Golden and her sisters, Tavia Gates, Jessie Bishop, Blanche Cannon, Nina Shepherd and her brother, H. W. "Grady" Golden.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to her caregivers, Lurline Kennedy, Mildred Hennegan, Eula Jones, Mary Sowers, Marie Culver, Dewanna Tucker, Jennifer Barnes, Shirley Davis and Paige Greer.
Ms. Barr leaves behind a true legacy of public service to her state, parish and community. She was distinguished as the first woman ever elected in a parish wide general election in Jackson Parish, LA., becoming its duly elected Tax Assessor from 1977 through 1980. Prior to that, she had served as Deputy and Chief Deputy Tax Assessor for 28 years and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and of the Louisiana Tax Assessor's Association.
She was an active member of the Eastern Star, Crescent Chapter #54 for 60 years, she served as its Worthy Matron in 1958. She gave a lifetime of service to the Jonesboro United Methodist Church, contributing generously and in many capacities. She was Beta Sigma Phi Sorority's First Lady of the Year for Jackson Parish in 1994.
Ms. Barr served on the Jackson Parish Housing Authority's Board of Directors since 1987, during which time she served terms as both Chairperson and Vice-Chair of the Board.
Though she was small in stature, her spirit was bigger than life, always looking on the brighter side of things. Evidence of this could be seen in her personal Friendship Bread Ministry, which began as a hobby, making bread, in 1979, and ended in her distribution of hundreds of loaves of bread over 30 years to friends, family and shut-ins. Her generosity and warmth were like a beacon that will be deeply missed by many.
Pallbearers will be, Bryan Cole, Tim Cole, Bradley Cole, Jacob Cole, Grady Golden and Bill Golden.
Honorary pallbearers will be, Bruce Thomas, Eddie Gatlin, Ann Walsworth, Van Beasley, A. J. Traina, Edith McConathy, Virginia Barr, Vickie J. Jones, Lurline Kennedy, Mildred Hennegan, Eula Jones, Mary Sowers, Marie Culver, Dewanna Tucker and Jennifer Barnes.
