Arliss Morelle Barr, 82, of Ruston, LA, was born July 19, 1928, in the Oak Ridge community near Vernon in Jackson Parish to William Hiram and Annie Carroll Barr. He passed away at his home in Ruston on January 28, 2011, following a brief illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Iley Barr, Archie Barr, and Robert Barr; sister Prairie Barr Hodde; and infant great-granddaughter Zo? Grace Foster.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Theo Greer Barr; daughters Debbie Barr Hancock and husband, Tawny, of Alexandria; and Sherri Barr Pearce and husband, Jim, of Ruston; sons Mike Barr and wife, Kay, of Vernon; Danny Barr and wife, JoAnn, of Ruston; and Chris Barr and wife, Lisa, of Ruston.
Morelle had fifteen grandchildren: Michael Hancock and wife, Cassidy; Jared Hancock and wife, Amanda; Whit Hancock and wife, Ashley; Megan Pearce; Hunter Pearce; Brandon Pearce; Jessica Barr Rinehart and husband, Chris; Aubrey Barr and wife, Shannon; Heather Barr Sherrard and husband, Casey; Caitlin Barr; Suzanne Barr Russell and husband, Matt; Danielle Barr Sliepka and husband, Alex; Amy Barr; Sara Kate Barr; and Reeves Barr. He also had ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Chatham High School, Morelle, affectionately known as "Mo" to many, served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1955, he and Theo moved their family from Vernon to Ruston when he began work with the U.S. Post Office. He worked as a clerk and then for many years as a Rural Letter Carrier. He was active in the Rural Letter Carriers Association. He retired in 1987. An avid outdoorsman, Morelle enjoyed hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, and gardening and he shared his love of these activities with his children and grandchildren. A quiet man of principles, Morelle believed in a good education and proudly saw all five of his children graduate from Louisiana Tech. He loved music and, during his retirement years, enjoyed many a show in Branson, MO.
A member of Southside Baptist Church for the past 54 years, Morelle served there as a deacon and the treasurer for over 40 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Ruston Masonic Lodge.
Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 30, 2011, at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, and a celebration of his life will be held Monday, January 31, 2011, at 10:00 A.M. at Southside Baptist Church in Ruston, with Revs. Jerry Key and David Abernathy officiating. Burial will follow at the Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery.
His grandsons will honor their PaPaw as pallbearers.
The family extends a special thanks to the wonderful caregivers from Always Best Care and to Drs. Ben Grigsby, David Osafa, Howard Murray, and Billy Smith for their compassionate care.
