Dr. Benjamin “Dr. Ben” Franklin Barrentine, 85, a retired professor and department head at Mississippi State Diversity, died of pneumonia on December 5, 1998 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12 at First United Methodist Church of Starkville with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery of Starkville.
Dr. Barrentine was a Lexington native, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Everett Barrentine. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Starkville.
He graduated from Holmes Junior College at Goodman and received a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Mississippi State College in 1937. He received a master’s degree in 1941 and a Ph.D. in 1943 in animal nutrition and bio-chemistry from Cornell University. He was the first person from Holmes County to receive a doctorate degree.
Survivors include: sons, James Barrentine of Cleveland. Ohio, Ben Barrentine, Jr. of Wickenburg, Arizona, and Melvin Barrentine of Austin, Texas; daughter, Melanie Barnes of Mountain Brook, Alabama; and seven grandchildren.
