Cora was born August 17, 1924 to Charles Raymond and Florence (Wildrick) Bender at LeRaysville, PA. She spent her youth in LeRaysville and graduated from high school there as salutatorian of her class.
She eventually met her brother's friend and married Michael S. Barondeau on November 10, 1944 at Vestal, NY. They made their first home in Endicott, NY before purchasing a home in Birchardville, PA. While in New York she worked in the Endicott Johnson Shoe Factory.
In 1952, they moved to a farm near Mike's family northwest of Onaka, SD.
It was there that they continued to raise their young family. As the children grew older, Cora worked for several years as a nurse's aide at Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven, SD.
However, the farm and her family were the focus of her life. Following her husband's death in 1986, she continued to make the farm her home for several decades, before moving to WestWood Assisted Living in Roscoe in 2005.
With the help of her daughter Suzanne she was able to return to the farm for her last two years, and only recently required the care of Golden Living Center in Ipswich.
Cora not only loved to sing, but she could also yodel. She and her sister-in-law would even record duets.
Her hands were never idle as she loved to sew. She created many clothing items, patched and altered others, and made many elaborate Halloween costumes and Easter baskets for her children and grandchildren. Cora also enjoyed roller skating at the Onaka Hall.
In her later years, she collected all sorts of dolls and was active in the Aberdeen Doll Club.
She had been an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Onaka where she served on the Altar Society and the Christian Mothers in years gone by.
Cora died Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Golden Living center in Ipswich. Memorials may be given in Cora's name to the Onaka Altar Society.
Thankful for having shared in her life are her five daughters, Beverly Kilber of Ipswich, Jacquelyn Barondeau of Rapid City, Marie (Bill) Molseed of Pierre, Suzanne Barondeau of Onaka, and Barbara (Robert) Knadle of Ipswich; two sons, Michael (Nancy) Barondeau Jr. of Roscoe and James Barondeau of Onaka; three sisters, Helen (Garry) Moore of St. Helens, OR, Mary Jane Poklemba of Maine, NY and Nina Mae (Edison) Thomas of Orwell, NY; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
