Emil Barondeau, 85, of Arkansas City, died Wednesday (March 17, 2004) at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center of Arkansas City. The Rosary will be recited 7:00 p.m. Friday (March 19, 2004) at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday also at the church. Father John Brungardt will officiate. Burial will follow the Mass at the Riverview Cemetery.
Emil was born September 28, 1918 in Onaka, South Dakota to Frank and Magdalena (Geotz) Barondeau. He was reared and educated in Onaka, graduating from high school there. Emil later attended business college in Chillicothe, Missouri. Emil served in the United States Army during WWII. He was awarded the EAME Ribbon with two stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain in 1947. Emil married Velma Mary Morton on November 21, 1942 in Winfield. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Emil worked as the traffic manager for the Rodeo Meat Packing Company for 25 years. He was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Shelton Beaty Post #18 American Legion, and the Spencer-Ralston Post #1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two sons Emil, Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mike and his wife Shirley of Arkansas City; one daughter Mary Joyce Evans of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four brothers Joe of Montrose, Pennsylvania, Lewis of Condee, South Dakota, Celestine and Frank both of Onaka, South Dakota; three grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Velma Mary Barondeau in 2002, two brothers Tom and Mike; and a sister Rose Hagenlock.
A memorial has been established with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Arrangements are being made by the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.
