Found in The State 06 January 1894: At about 5:30 o'clock yesterday morning Prof. Charles Heyward Barnwell, one of the most esteemed and prominent, though retired, citizens of Columbia, passed away, after only a short illness, at his home at the corner of Barnwell and Plain streets. He had been a sufferer from pulmonary troubles for a number of years, and several years ago he retired from active business. It was only a few days ago, however, that it became evident that his end was drawing near. Prof. Barnwell was 58 years of age. From 1870 up to a few years ago he taught a private school in this city, devoted to the education of boys and young men. For several years he was the principal of the Columbia Male Academy. He has always lived a quiet life, and had the respect of every one in Columbia. Prof. Barnwell was born in Beaufort county, this State. He married in early life a Miss Thompson of Orangeburg county, who survives him. He was a member of the historic Barnwell family of this State. The name is widely and favorable known in the social, religious, legal and literary annals of South Carolina. His mother was a member of the equally widely known and prominent Gibbes family of the lower portion of Carolina. Many years before the war his maternal aunt married the New York millionaire, John Jacob Astor. Consequently Prof. Barnwell was the first cousin of William Waldorf Astor, at present the richest man in the world, and editor and owner of the Pall Mall Gazette of London. Mr. Barnwell leaves surviving him a widow, three sons here, William, B. W. and Louis, one son in Alabama, Prof. C. H. Barnwell, Jr., a professor in the Alabama Agricultural College, a married daughter in New York and one in Charleston, Mrs. John Kelly. The funeral announcement will be made later.

From the South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Volume 2, page 68 and page 71: Charles Heyward Barnwell (son of William Wigg Barnwell and Sarah Reeve Gibbes) b. Jan 14, 1837; m. May 10, 1859, Charlotte Lucilla Thomson, of Orangeburg District; d. Jan. 5, 1894.
