Lenore Barnum, 77, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who we called "GiGi" went peacefully into the night to be with the Lord on July 20, 2009. She fought a brave fight against cancer and we prayed for a miracle, but she passed away at St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley. Until the end, she told us, "Never give up."
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, "Sonny" Carl Barnum Jr., whom she first met when she was 4 and he was 8. He would not let her ride his bike. A few years later, when she was 16 and he was in the Navy stationed aboard the USS Princeton, she called him and asked him to take her to the Backwards Dance. He said yes. They married on Aug. 21, 1948, and she graduated high school the next year. They've been sweethearts for nearly 61 years.
After raising three children and moving to the High Desert in the late '70s, she and Sonny became involved in the real estate business, owning and operating Team Real Estate based out of their home in Apple Valley. She loved showing property and met many wonderful folks along the way. Everyday was exciting to her.
She was an excellent seamstress and loved to sew dresses for her girls. She made their home warm with her presence, great food and parties. She loved to dance! She was beautiful in every way and the life of the party. She and Sonny would travel together and she would follow him to the end of the earth just to be with him. Everyone loved her and her beautiful smile, and no one would have known she had cancer. Her strength, love and selflessness made all around her feel blessed to have known her.
Lenore was born in Los Angeles on Aug. 21, 1931, and was an only child and later in life she discovered she'd had two half-sisters in Texas, one still living, and with the help of her daughter Cathy and the Internet she found Pam Lytal in Dallas. They have been close ever since, and look amazingly alike.
Also left behind to remember her beautiful spirit with her husband, Carl, are her daughters Cathy Kelly and Patty Miller; son Carl Barnum III; grandson Jason Kelly and his wife, Eve, of Apple Valley; TSGT Lucas Miller, USAF, and his wife, Rachel, of San Angelo, Texas. They have five great-grandchildren, Devin Kelly, Claire Kelly, Ryan Kelly, Aidan Kelly and Rylan Miller.
Our mother also had a special place in her heart for a special Leonberger named "Razzi."
Lenore was preceded in death by her mother, Lydia Carr, of Los Angeles; father, Thomas Ray Smith, of Texas; and grandsons Peter Jerome Kelly of Victorville and Casey Miller of Apple Valley.
