Mrs. Maurice V. Barnhill (Peggy) passed away on March 28, 2009. She was 91.
She was the daughter of Herbert Henry and Minnie McCullough Zerbach, who named her Ruth Margaret.
Born in Great Falls, MT, Mrs. Barnhill grew up in Rocky Mount, NC. She graduated from Flora McDonald College, where she was May Queen. A charter member of the Junior Guild, she taught in church every grade of Sunday school, adult classes, and Bible studies. She sang at funerals and weddings in Rocky Mount, and won a wristwatch singing on a national radio show. She volunteered at the Wilmington, NC hospital as a "pink lady."
Mrs. Barnhill was married to the late M. V. Barnhill of Wilmington, N.C. for more than 60 years. She was a devoted wife, an outstanding mother, a superb mother-in-law, and the best grandmother ever. She was known for her hilarious sense of humor, her kindness and generosity toward others, and her Southern grace. People who met her inevitably would say "What a sweet lady." She was devoted to her family, and a good friend and neighbor. She said at the end that she had a wonderful life.
She is survived by son Dr. Maurice V. Barnhill, III; son James H. Barnhill, Esq. and his wife, Georgia B. Barnhill; granddaughter Christina Barnhill Gunther and her husband Frederick Gunther; granddaughter Caroline E. Barnhill and her fianc, John Freeman; two great-grandchildren, Sophia Venetianer and Deanna Gunther; nephew Dr. Hugh Mills and his wife Tu-Ahn Mills; nephew Dr. Michael Mills and his wife Ruth Mills; grand-nephew Dr. Richard Mills, his wife Saffron Mills, and their two children, Julian and Phoebe; grand-niece Katie Mills; grand-nephew Nathanial Mills; good friends Cookie Smith, Marion Rippy, Doris Pickard, Jeanette Harvin; and Milton, Samantha, Pete, and Henry.
