Mildred Barney, 93, of Richeyville died Wednesday July 4, 2007 in the Emergency Department of Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was born February 1, 1914 in California, Pa. a daughter of the late Harry and Mary Krynak Barney. Miss Barney was a 1932 graduate of Centerville High School and Received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from California University of Pennsylvania. She had been a teacher in the Bethlehem-Center School District for 43 years and was the first teacher from the district to teach at her alma mater. During World War II she served as principal at Rosefield School in Richeyville and served on the U.S. War Bond Committee. She served as an integral part of a committee formed to organize plans for the towns honor roll and war memorial and later wrote a history of Richeyville for the revised edition of the book "Centre to Center". Many of her friends and former students felt it was time to pay tribute to Miss Barney, so on July 24, 1999 a testimonial dinner was held in her honor at the Nemacolin Country Club. Miss Barney had made a major impact on their lives through her 24 years of teaching at the Richeyville School and her 19 years teaching in the Beth-Center School District. In 1979 she received the American legion Distinguished Service Award from the Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post #705 of Centerville for her many dedicated years in the field of education for the residents of Centerville Boro. She is also listed in the book "Outstanding Leaders in Elementary and Secondary Education" and was active in the Centerville Boro Teachers Association, Bethlehem-Center Teachers Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, and the National Education Association. Miss Barney was a active longtime member of the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church of West Brownsville where she was a choir member from 1950 to 1960 and served as choir director from 1960 to 2003. She was instrumental in organizing the church Sunday school program in which she taught for six years and also served as the church financial secretary from 1962 to 1971 and was the first woman to hold this position. She had been a member of the Washington County Chapter of School Retirees, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Brownsville Business and Professional Women's Club, South Western Pennsylvania Math Association, International Reading Association, Centerville Boro. Jr. High Choir, Mon Valley Orthodox Choir, Centerville Bicentennial Committee, Beth-Center Senior Citizen's Club of Vestaburg, Center in the Woods of California, Pa., served as treasure of the Jr. Women's Club of Richeyville, and was a 50 year member of the Nemacolin Country Club. She is survived by two sisters, Joyce Barney of Richeyville, Eve Sheetz of Woodstock, VA., one brother, John A. Barney of Seattle Wa., one niece, Mary Beth Murphy (Larry), and two nephews, John Edwards Barney (Abby) & Maj. Stewart Strickland. Deceased in addition to her parents are two sisters, Olga Barney, Judy Strickland, and one brother, Theodore Barney. Private funeral services were held in the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main St. Beallsville. Interment was in Beallsville Cemetery.
