ARLINGTON, Va. - Alan L. Barnett, 58, of Arlington has died. (Feb. 23, 2003)

He was born to L. Berl and Lucy J. Barnett. He was a member of Gilman Methodist Church in Marietta. He was a 1962 graduate of Marietta High School and a 1966 graduate of Marietta College, where he was a member of Alpha Phi Omega. He earned his M.S. degree from the University of Vermont in 1970.

After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1972 to 1976 as a marine science technician at the Guard's Oceanographic Unit, he began his 28-year career at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Beginning in Environmental Branch, he retired as a computer specialist, earning numerous awards for superior job performance.

A member of the board of directors of North Fairlington Villages for six years, he served as treasurer for two years and assisted the Fairlington Historical Society in achieving Historic District status for the Fairlington Villages.

A skilled craftsman and avid sportsman, he won several prizes for decoy carving at the Ward Brothers' Competition, and won several championships in trap shooting when a member of the Prince George's Rod and Gun Club. A member of the DC Radio Control Club, he also won prizes for model sailplane construction.

He is survived by his wife, Cherie P. Barnett; his mother of Marietta; and his mother-in-law, Vivian Phillips of Taneytown, Md.

He was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, John M. Barnett.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington at 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va. Burial is at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery at 38 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, Md.
