On 6 Sep 1866 Abner married Helen Nancy Mitchell, daughter of David and Nancy Graham Mitchell. Abner and Helen Nancy had four daughters: Mary Helena 'Lela', Winifred Elizabeth, Anna M, and Helen 'Hallie' Nancy. After his first wife's death, Abner married a second time and had another child, Roberta Olivia.

From military records:Barnes, Abner R. Age 18. Residence Washington County,Ia nativity Indiana. Enlisted & mustered May 4,1864Mustered out Sept. 16, 1864, Keokuk, Iowa, expiration of 100 day term of service.
Mustered Keokuk,Iowa. The regiment left its rendezvous at Keokuk a few days after it was mustered into service, was conveyed to St. Louis, Mo., and thence to Memphis, Tenn., and,upon its arrival at the latter place, was assigned to the duty of guarding the line of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad—in conjunction with other troops from Iowa and from other States. It continued in the performance of this duty until the close of its term of service of one hundred days. (Info from "The Union Army" published 1908.)
