Mrs. Baird Dies at 83
Longtime Resident of Estherville
Mrs. W. A. Baird, 83, long time Estherville and Emmet county resident died 2:45 p.m. yesterday at the Baird home in Estherville. Although she had been in failing health for the last three years, she had been ill just a few hours. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Born Ida May Barnes, Oct. 14, 1866, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Barnes of Monmouth, Ill., and received her education in her native city and at Atlantic normal school at Atlantic, Ia. Following her graduation, she taught for a number of years in Cass county schools.
Jan. 10, 1889, she was married to A. W. Baird, and the couple lived at first at Marne, where she assisted her husband in the postoffice, and was very active in the Marne Methodist church. She moved to Estherville April 1, 1915, and March 1 that year, the couple moved to a farm eight miles northeast of Estherville and 1923 moved to a farm five miles northwest of Armstrong, retiring and moving to Estherville Feb. 1, 1935.
She was a life long member of the Methodist church.
Although she had been ailing for the past three years, she had continued cheerful and active.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Albert Baird of St. James, Minn., and Donald of Odin, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Guy Simpson of Estherville; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One grandson, Dale Baird, graduate of Estherville Junior college was killed in action overseas during World War II.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Baird home and at 2:30 p.m. at Estherville Methodist church, Rev. John DeLong officiating. Burial will be at East Side cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 30, 1949)
