Military services were conducted today at the Church of Christ in Steele, Mo., by the pastor, the Rev. Thomas C. Whitfield, for 1st Lt. George F. Barnes, 25, who was killed February 26, 1945, on Luzon. Lt. Barnes' body was returned from the No. 1 Cemetery in Manila, and arrived in Steele this morning with an individual military escort. Lt. Barnes, was born in Steele, Jan. 28, 1920, and lived there until he entered the service. He was in a National Guard unit taken into the Army in 1940. He was serving with the Sixth Army Division at the time of his death. The services this afternoon were conducted by the VFW, with Edward Denham in command and members serving as pallbearers, buglers, and members of the firing squad. Survivors of Lt. Barnes include his father, a retired farmer, Hollie Barnes; four brothers, Roy Barnes of Lilbourn, Mo., Chester, Cecil and Everrett Barnes, all of Steele, and three sisters, Mrs. Morris Turner, of Steele, Mrs. Dorothy Corbin of Caruthersville and Mrs. Matilone Biggs of Steele.
