Leavenworth, Kan. — John Barnes
John Gayton Barnes (Jack) of Kansas City, Missouri, died Tuesday, February 2, 2010. Jack was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, April 1, 1910. He was the son of John G Barnes, Sr., of Barnes-Collard Chevrolet.
Jack attended schools in Leavenworth and received Bachelors and Masters degrees in Architecture from the University of Kansas.
Jack served in the U.S. Army during WWII as Post Engineer of the Dodge City Air Force Base and helped establish the Air Corps School of Post Engineers, serving as Assistant Supervisor.
He subsequently served in the Missouri Division of the Corps of Engineers, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after 28 years.
Jack was a heating/ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) engineer. He served Natkin & Co. for 22 years.
In 1959 he established his own business as an HVAC Engineer and consultant. In later years he worked with Black & Veach Design Group and the Building Codes Departments of Kansas City, Missouri, retiring at the age of 90.
In 1934 Jack married Dorthea Taylor, to whom he was married until her death in 1978.
He leaves a son, John G. Barnes, III of Bedford, New Hampshire, and a daughter, Dora Lu Hart of Cheyenne, Wyoming. He is survived by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In 1980 Jack married Betty Smith Williams, to whom he was married until her death in 2005. He leaves a stepdaughter, Joanne Hindman of Kansas City and a stepson, David Williams of Oklahoma City.
A memorial service will be held at the Second Presbyterian Church of Kansas City at 10:00A.M., Wednesday, March 17.
