Obituary- STEUBEN REPUBLICAN,
Wednesday, October 6, 1897, p. 5, col. 5
In Angola, Indiana, Wednesday, September 29, 1897, Ira Barnes, aged 79 years, 8 months and one day.
Deceased was born in Delaware Co., New York, and came with his parents to Steuben county in 1839, when about nineteen years of age, being one of the pioneers of the county. For fifty-nine years he lived on the same farm in York township. He was united in marriage
with Lydia Carpenter, Jan. 1, 1846, and to the union were born seven
children, four of whom with the wife having preceded him to the spirit world. He was again married, in 1869, to Caroline Stafford,
who survives him. In early life he was a member of the Free Will
Baptist church, but later in years united with the Christian church.
Mr. Barnes was possessed of great physical strength and in the early
days could carry the end of a log or chop down a tree with as much ease as the best of men. His taking away was sudden and unexpected, being stricken down while walking on he streets of Angola. A kindhearted and generous citizen has gone to his reward. Funeral services were held at North Scott Christian church, Elder D. C. Hanselman officiating.
