Obituary
"The Daily Democrat", (Shelbyville, IN) Wednesday, May 9, 1928 (page 3)

"CHARLES M. BARNES DIED THIS MORNING
"LIFELONG RESIDENT OF COUNTY PASSED AWAY
AT HOME HERE AFTER TWO WEEKS ILLNESS
"Charles M. Barnes, lifelong resident of Shelby Co. and one of the most widely know men in the community, died at 4:30 this morning at his home, 346 E. Washington Street, following two weeks serious illness from a complication of diseases. For several days, Mr. Barnes' condition had been critical and announcement of his death this morning was received with keenest regret by hundreds of friends.

"Funeral services are to be held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon from the late home with Dr. L.T. Freeland, pastor of the First M.E. Church officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at the Vienna Cemetery, in charge C.F. Fix & Son, funeral directors.

"Mr. Barnes was the son of the late Elijah and Mary Barnes and was born in Shelby Township near the Barnes' School, October 20, 1856, being at the time of death, seventy-one years, six months and nineteen days old. He had resided in Shelby County his entire lifetime and for the past thirty-four years had lived in this city.

"On December 24, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Frances Emma Arnold and to this union, five children were born, three of whom survive. He was a member of the First M.E. Church here and was also affiliated with the Ben Hur Lodge.

"Besides the widow, Mrs. Frances E. Barnes, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Earl Hayes, of this city and Mrs. Carl Jose of Louisville, KY; one son, Frank A. Barnes, of Aurora, IN; one brother, Stephen D. Barnes and a sister Mrs. Missouri Chapman, both of Shelby Township. He also leaves seven grandchildren."
