In Cass Accident
Services for 4-year-old Elizabeth
Ann Barnes, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Barnes
of route 1, Burnettsville, who
was fatally injured in a traffic
accident Friday, will be at 3:30
p.m. Sunday at Fisher Funeral
Home.
The Rev. John Deal will officiate
and burial will be in Davis
Cemetery.
The child died in an accident
at 8:40 a.m. seven miles west
of here on U.S. 24. It was the
tenth traffic fatality of the year
in Cass county, including one in
Logansport.
She was riding with her father
in a pickup truck which
was struck by a semi-trailer
loaded with beef as Barnes at-
tempted to turn left into a pri-
vale driveway.
The truck, driven by Ray
Page Jr., 40, of Wichita, Kan.
had already started to pass the
pickup when Barnes started to
turn left, police said.
The impact drive the pick-up
150 feet along the brim on it's
side and it was struck again by
the semi and knocked into the
ditch, landing on its wheels.
The semi continued down the
berm, finally overturning on its
side. It knocked down a utility
pole, disrupting electric service
in the area.
Barnes was treated at Memorial
Hospital for a bruised left
eye. The little girl sustained
severe head injuries and was
dead on arrival at Memorial
Hospital.
The beef was loaded onto another
truck. The scene was
cleared at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
State Trooper John Gaylor and
Deputy Sheriff Robert Sabatini
investigated.
The child was born March 2,
1960, in Logansport, to Herbert
and Jane Haynes-Barnes.
Surviving with the parents are
a brother, Bradley, at home;
the paternal grandfather, Thomas
V. Barnes of route 1, Burnettsville,
and the maternal
grandmother, Mrs. Katherine
Haynes of 125 Northern Ave.
