A funeral for Carrie W. Barnes, 82, who died Wednesday (Feb. 18, 2009) morning will be held Saturday at noon at Greater Mount Zion A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Ralph Bess presiding and the Rev. Abrahm Frazier Sr. conducting the eulogy.
Friends are being received at the home of her son, Leonard Welch. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Hazzard Hill Cemetery.
She was the second of three children born to the late Theodore and Maggie Welch. Her husband was the late Johnnie Barnes Sr. She received her formal education from the public schools of Waycross and graduated from Center High School. She received a bachelors degree from Morris Brown College in Atlanta and a masters degree from Columbia University in New York, N.Y. She was a faithful and longtime member of Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church where she served as a steward, trustee, Sunday School teacher, class leader, kitchen helper and was a member of the finance committee. She assisted with the youth department, helping with the youth usher board, youth choir, Black History Month and the Easter programs. She was a retired school teacher of the Waycross school system with more than 37 years of service.
Survivors include two sons, Leonard (Alma Shinhoster Welch) Welch and Johnnie Barnes Jr., both of Waycross; a sister, Gladys Hall, of Waycross; six grandchildren, Lamar Welch, Martin Welch, Steven Welch, Stacy E. Barnes, James Lewis and Yoshika Johnson; two greatgrandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Fluker Funeral Home.
