John Barnes

John Barnes was born 6 November 1763 at Marlborough, Massachusetts, son of Daniel Barnes and Martha Brigham. He was raised in Marlborough and at the age of eleven he was at Bunker Hill where his father was a captain of militia. From there he followed the course of the war including time spent at Valley Forge. It appears that he stayed with his father on campaign until Daniel died in 1779. He most likely returned to Marlborough, and at age 17, he enlisted in the 8th Company, 4th Massachusetts Continental Regiment on 1 April 1781.

Regiment records describe John Barnes as blond, blue eyes, 5 feet 4 inches tall, and of slender build. He was stationed at Newburgh, New York (north of West Point) at Washington's headquarters. For the remainder of the war he spent most of his time at Newburgh with some tours at West Point. Toward the close of the war in June 1783, John Barnes was finally discharged from the Continental Army. In later years he was to say that he was discharged by General Washington at Newburgh. This is most likely true since Washington signed all discharge certificates for his army. Unfortunately, John Barnes later lost his certificate, which later complicated his applications for pension.

Following the end of the war, John Barnes returned to Marlborough, where he married Sarah Howe on 8 March 1785. They then removed to Chelsea, Vermont, were ten children were born, including a daughter Mary (1810).

John took up farming; but by 1818, he was broke and applied for a Revolutionary War pension, which was granted. John Barnes died at Chelsea, Vermont on 12 September 1834.

Following the death of her husband, Sarah Barnes left Chelsea with her daughter Mary and Mary's husband, Joseph Eggleston (married 24 January 1832). The family moved first to Albany and then to Lawrence, Franklin County, New York. Sarah died in January 1844 and was buried at North Lawrence, St. Lawrence, New York.
