Richard Roswell Barnes, 80, of Ventura, passed away on Sept. 13, 2008, at Ventura Convalescent Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Upland, Calif., on Sept. 24, 1927.

Richard and his family moved to Ventura County in 1930 and lived in Fillmore, then settled in Saticoy in 1936. He was a resident of Ventura County for 78 years. He attended Saticoy Grammar School, Ventura Junior High and Ventura High School, graduating in 1945. He entered the Army at age 18, serving in World War II in the Philippines. After his service, he attended Claremont Men's College and graduated from San Jose State College in 1954. He worked as a real estate appraiser and right-of-way agent for the County of Ventura for 10 years. After obtaining a teaching credential from California State University at Northridge, he taught math for 30 years for the Los Angeles Unified School District until his retirement in 1995.

He is survived by his lovely wife, Ruth; former wife, JoAnn Morettini; sons, Richard J. Barnes, Michael Barnes, and William Barnes and his wife, Laura; daughters, Janet Barnes and Mary Barnes and her husband, Jesse Quirino; grandchildren, Russell Barnes and Melissa Barnes. He is also survived by his sister, Mariane Noakes, and her husband, Donald of Filley, Neb.; brothers Martin Barnes, M.D., and his wife, Maralyn, and Charles Barnes, M.D., of Ventura; stepson, Martin Feister and his wife, Ollie; stepdaughter, Karin Brown, and her husband, Phil, and step-granddaughter, Lisa Brown; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Bergman Barnes; father, Thomas Coventry Barnes; brother Thomas Coventry Barnes Jr.; and brother Philip John Barnes.

Richard had a full and joyous life. He liked sports of all kinds, and played tennis and golf for many years. He especially loved to golf and played up to the last weeks of his life. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, and trips along the Pacific coast. He enjoyed playing the piano, organ and guitar. He even played the guitar and sang solos in the old Saticoy Community Church during the 1970s and 1980s, like his mother before him, the same church his parents attended for many years. He married Ruth Feister in 2005 and his last years with Ruthie were the happiest of his life.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. A service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Church of the Foothills, 6279 Foothill Road. Interment will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, Ventura.
