Clark Barnes was born at Dayton, N. Y., February 2, 1852 and died March 23, 1928. He was the only son of Surlanty and Caroline Burchard Barnes, a sister having passed away September 20, 1863. While a small child his parents moved to East Otto and with the exception of two years lived in Ashford, he spent his entire life in East Otto having lived for fifty-one years on the farm where he died. On January 19, 1876 he married Ann L. daughter of James Mercer, who was born in England and came to America in 1826. To this union were born three children, J. Carl and May L. who are left to mourn their loss and Ina D., who died at the age of three years, Mr. Barnes enjoyed reading and took a great interest in current events. He was active in politics, serving his town first as Assessor and later as Town Superintendent of Highways. At the time of his death he was President of the Board of School Directors for the Third Supervisory District and Vice-President of the Directors of the Cemetery Association. Although in failing health for some time, he was able to be about the house to the last. Of a cheerful disposition, thoughtful in his home, an accomodating neighbor, kind and sympathetic to those in trouble, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The funeral services were held from the M. E. church at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon March 26th. Rev. J.W. Archibald officiating. He was laid to rest in the East Otto cemetery beside his wife who preceded him to the better land about thirty years ago. The bearers at the funeral were four nephews of the deceased. Friends and relatives were present from Washington, D. C, Buffalo, Salamanca, Springville, Ellicottville, West Valley, Ashford, Gowanda, Cattaraugus and Mansfield.
