Donny graduated from West Edgecombe High School in 1973. Following graduation, Donny served in the U. S. Army and the National Guard for ten years.
Donny was employed in the maintenance department at Sam's Club for the past seven years. He loved and was very faithful to his job. Donny was well known for riding his bicycle to work at four o' clock in the morning in spite of weather conditions. There was mutual love between Donny and his co-workers, including management. He received certificates and awards of excellence from Sam's Club and also from Century Steps, where he worked previously for eleven years.
Donny is survived by: his loving wife of twenty-four years, Matilda "Till" Barnes; son, Donny Ray Barnes, Jr.; one grandson; six granddaughters; stepdaughter, Michelle Blackmon Smith (Terrell); sister, Linda Barnes of Rocky Mount, NC; aunts, Rev. Ora Mercer and Lula Barnes of Rocky Mount, NC, Doris Lowe (Lawrence) of Greensboro, NC and Miller Moore of High Point, NC; sisters-in-law, Yvonnia Blackmon and Jean Lucas of Raleigh, NC, and Ann Drewery (Granville) of Spring Hope, NC; brothers-in-law, Danny Blackmon (Joyce) of Zebulon, NC, and Albert Blackmon (Peggy) of Spring Hope, NC; future daughter-in-law, Aaliyah Davis; and many cousins and friends.
