John Henry Barnes was born on March 29, 1857, near Nebo in Laclede County, Missouri, the first child of James William and Sarah Ann (McGinnis) Barnes. His McGinnis grandparents lived just up the hill. He grew up with 5 brothers and 1 sister.

The Civil War interrupted his education, and he apparently did not have regular schooling in his early years. The family moved to Osage Township near Oakland around the end of the war but later moved back to Nebo. While they were at Oakland, John's mother died. His father remarried and had 5 more children, but John was grown by then.

John was engaged as a young man, but his fiancé died and John never cared for another woman. For many years he made his home with his brother Willie's family until they moved out of state in 1927. He then lived with his parents and half-brother Crit, who was 25 years younger than John.

As John entered his 70s, his personality changed and there were problems with Crit's young family. There were reports of his being "mean to the children." When no other family would take John in, Crit took him to the county poor farm in Phillipsburg.

John lived in Phillipsburg, Missouri, on January 1, 1933. He died there on March 23, 1934, at the age of 76, and was buried in the McGinnis Cemetery next to his family's home farm.

Gravesite Details

The grave marker was ordered some years after John's death. Both dates are incorrect--either the family member's memory was faulty or the monument company got the dates very wrong, or possibly both.
