James Wesley Barks was the son of Amos and Anne Barks, and known as J.W. His brother, Amos J., preceded J.W. in death, in 1992; and a nephew Stanton Lee Barks in 1969.

J. W. Barks married Willie Mae Smith on August 1, 1953. They lived most of their lives in the Tarrant county area. They were blessed with one daughter.
