BELVA M. (Penny) BARKMAN, 87, went to be with the Lord on August 3, 2009 at the Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, Kansas. Born on September 30, 1921 in Hagerstown, Maryland, she was the daughter of Edgar and Delilah Shrader.
She was a 1940 graduate of Hagerstown High School and then moved with her family to San Diego, California, where she met and married Floyd J. Barkman on March 12, 1944.
Following the war they moved to the family farm near Burden, Kansas, where they raised their sons and farmed for 20 years. They later moved to Wichita, Kansas, where they operated a very successful business selling Saladmaster cookware.
Their favorite memories in retirement were the years spent traveling with friends on their Gold Wing motorcycles, as well as camping trips in their Winnebago. In retirement, she became an avid and skilled quilter, providing heirloom quilt gifts for each of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other family members and special friends.
Penny had resided in Hutchinson since September of 2007.
Her family includes: Her sons: Floyd Barkman and wife Janett of Hutchinson, KS; Don Barkman and wife Donna of Glenpool, OK; and Ken Barkman and wife Darlene of Tulsa, OK; Her grandchildren: Michele (Joel) Gunderson, Jana (Mike) Borgmeyer, Hope (Ryan) Friesen, Mark (Terra) Barkman, Nick (Sherrill) Barkman, Jennifer (Doug) Vogel, Justin Barkman and fianceé Korilyn and Ashley (Matt) Swisher; Her 11 great-grandchildren; Kiersten, Gretchen, Grace, Madeline, Brynn, Adler, Denton, Danae, Drey, Zoe and Kaia; Her sister: Gloria Olson of Dickinson, ND; Her sisters-in-law: Marie Brooks, Darlene Roe, Barbara Watters, Gloria Barkman; Her brother-in-law: Ira Barkman; Former daughter-in-law: Maxine Barkman and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband on August 30, 2000; an infant son, David; her step-father, Orval Clark; her sister, Faye Bedillion Holzman; and her brother, Edgar Shrader, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 8, 2009, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
