Mrs. Alberta R. (Riddlesberger) Barkley, 96, of 80 Wynnecrest Drive, Waynesboro, died Saturday, April 5, 2014 in the Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD.

Born November 21, 1917 in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Ethel (Mills) Riddlesberger. She lived most of her life in the Waynesboro area.

Mrs. Barkley graduated from Waynesboro High School with the class of 1935. She later graduated from Gettysburg College in 1940 with her degree in history. While in college, she was a member of the choir and the Delta Gamma Sorority.

She married William W. Barkley, Jr. in December 1943 and moved to Brooklyn, NY, where he was stationed at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital. She moved back to Waynesboro while her husband served in World War II. After the war, Dr. Barkley set up his practice in Waynesboro. Dr. Barkley died on December 27, 1991.

Mrs. Barkley was employed at the Mont Alto Sanitorium as a secretary from 1940-1943.

She was an active member of the Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary for many years, where she served on the auxiliary board for several of those years. She also served on the Franklin County Family Planning Board, as President of the Foreign Exchange Student Committee in 1964, and as a Girl Scout leader and Boy Scout den mother. She was a lifetime member of Christ United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two children, Dr. William W. Barkley, III and his wife, Penny, and Roberta (Barkley) Elchak and her husband, Terry; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara (Barkley) Sulanke; and her only brother, Mercheline Riddlesberger.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, April 10, 2014 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, Thursday morning, in the funeral home.
