John Milton Barker was born to John Matthew and Alice (Putman) Barker on Nov. 27, 1881, near Confidence in Wayne County, Ia. And died on Jan. 6, 1978, at the Lucas County Hospital at the age of 96 years.
His father died when he was three years old, leaving the mother and two little boys, Miltie and Ben. Their Uncle Charley Putman helped with the care of the boys until their mother remarried and Andrew Duer became their step-father. His mother died in 1919.
He lived his entire life in the same community having moved in 1914 to the family home, where he resided until the time of his death. On March 3, 1909, he was married to Minnie Alice Yocum and one daughter, Pauline, was born to them.
On Jan. 6, 1909, he was baptized into Christ in later life he re-committed himself to the Lord remaining a faithful member of the Sunnyslope Church of Christ until his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie, in 1954, his brother, Ben, in 1956, two half-brothers, Carl and William Duer and one half-sister, Mrs. Ella Jones.
For several years he has made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Howard and Pauline Vincent who survive him. Others of his family who survive are his three grandchildren, whom he thought of as his own children, they having been born and reared next door to him on the family farm. He leaves 13 great grandchildren, who were very dear to him. The family includes Elzan and her husband, Roger McMurry and their children: Patrick, Laura, Maurice, Andrew and Chara of Columbia, Mo.; Dianne and her husband, Harold Mitchell and their children: David, Douglas, Paul, Martha and Sarah of Manhattan, Kans.; Jacob Milton Vincent and his wife Marilyn, with their children: Joel, Anni and Benji of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Funeral services were held at Sunnyslope Church of Christ, at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, conducted by Roger McMurry and Harold Mitchell with a tribute by Jacob Vincent.
Pall bearers were Lloyd George, Walter Faulconer, Ernest Sharp, Warren Ekholm, Delmar Lewis and Bob Harris. Honorary bearers were Dewey Robertson, Homer Robertson, Holly Buoy, Harley Jones and Earl Purcell. Interment was in Confidence Cemetery.
