James Barker dies; ex-coach, teacher, AD

James H. Barker, a former teacher and athletic director at Valley View High School, died Monday at his residence. He was 73.
Mr. Barker of Germantown began his teaching and coaching career in 1948 in Marshall, Ohio, and retired from Valley View in 1981. He was a graduate of Wilmington College.
Mr. Barker taught biology and coached basketball at Valley View, and he was athletic director there from 1961 to 1980. In October 1978, Barker Field was dedicated in honor of his 30-year career at Valley View.
Mr. Barker served on the board of directors at Grandview Hospital and actively supported the Germantown Rescue Squad. He also was an antique collector and dealer. He owned Little Farm Antiques in Germantown.
Survivors include two sisters, Pauline Deininger and Shirley Walker, both of Lynchburg, and a brother, Roger A. Barker of Mason.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today (Masonic service at 6 p.m.) at the Dalton Funeral Home in Germantown. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Germantown Rescue Squad.
