James Edward Barfield, 70, of Versailles, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at his residence. He was born June 11, 1936, in Beardstown, the son of Arthur and Mamie Dunmire Barfield. He married Phyllis Flynn on Oct. 4, 1968, in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Guy Baker of Springfield; three daughters; Cheryl (husband, Steve) Elston of Decatur, Debbie (husband, Randy) Buescher of Decatur and Becky Baker (fiancÚ, Todd Snow) of Springfield; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Cledus (wife, Esther) Barfield of Versailles; and five sisters, Helen (husband, Jim) Bunch of Godfrey, Velma Heckrodt of Mt. Sterling, Lucille Jockisch of Meredosia, Dorothy (husband, Clyde) Wilson of Monticello, Mo., and Carol (husband, Walt) Mefford of Meredosia. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dawn Edlin; and one sister, Betty June Barfield.
Mr. Barfield was a construction foreman, and had worked for S.J. Groves Construction, Crider Construction, and Illinois Valley Paving, and also for the Meredosia Elevator. He had been baptized in the Baptist faith. Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed the outdoors. More than anything he loved spending time with his family.
