ARTHUR J. BARCO, HAD OWNED BARCO MARINE RAILWAY INC.
Arthur James Barco, 89, of the 900 block of Laskin Road, retired owner of Barco Marine Railway Inc., died June 30, 1992, in his home.
Mr. Barco was born in Virginia Beach. He founded the boatyard in 1936 and was instrumental in establishing boating in the area through his career in boat building and repair. He also raced boats during the 1920s and '30s. The boatyard is still being operated by his son, Terry.
Mr. Barco had retired from the Norfolk Naval Supply Center where he worked for 22 years.
He was a Mason and a member of Virginia Beach Masonic Lodge 274.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Britt Barco; a daughter, Jo Anne Dougherty of Franklin, Mass.; two sons, Arthur J. Barco Jr. and Terry L. Barco; a sister, Erma Leatherwood; and a brother, Benjamin Barco, all of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church Cemetery by the Rev. William D. Bruner. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road.
Memorial donations may be made to the Life-Saving Museum of Virginia, Virginia Marine Science Museum or Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
