Johney Bertine Barclay was born near Watonga in Oklahoma Territory to George F. Barclay and his wife Della (nee Ella Eudell Harrison). She was the sister of Ethel Vina (Barclay) Barber. Bertie's mother died on April 7, 1902, and Bertie was placed in the care of her maternal grandparents. The Harrisons moved to Falls City in Polk County, Ore., sometime before the 1910 US census was taken. From her obituary: "At Sidney, October 29, Mrs. Bertie Johnston, age 25 years, wife of Clifford Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Barkley, sister of Ethel Barkley.
